How BMO is creating a system of systems with DSM

Bank of Montreal (BMO), as is the case with most financial institutions, supports a number of business units across various geographies and customer groups.

This complexity requires a complex, but structured, approach to their design system. To help setup the initial organization that will support their org long-term, they have created a "Common" design system that feeds sub-systems through Sketch's linked library functionality.

The central design systems team at BMO used the above diagram to communicate to their stakeholders how this ambitious system of systems architecture will work. Now, depending on the people and time resources you are able to dedicate, we don't recommend diving into this at first. However, the mature system that BMO is creating, supported by DSM, is a good northern star to strive towards over the long run.
