Article summary

When building your components from scratch in Sketch, there is an ideal way to do this for a design system. Plus there are a few features available in Sketch to utilize for components.

  1. Start with smaller components and build up to larger ones
  2. Define elements within components
  3. Create one symbol source per each component state and variant
  4. Nest symbols to use symbol overrides
The folder structure chosen in Sketch pulls into DSM. If you’re using Sketch’s slash naming convention (e.g. button/primary/default), you’ll see that it comes over as a folder hierarchy structure when uploading to DSM. On your documentation site, you recommend you choose to follow a similar structure but you can do something different. Just know that the slash naming structure will remain the same when building with a DSM managed library in Sketch.
