Article summary

Timelines in Freehand provide a visual and intuitive way to plan work for your team. Create timelines to quickly map out start and end dates for different tasks in your project and get a clear view of your project timeline, dependencies, and resource availability.

Timelines support a range of properties, including assignees, dates, and tags.

Add a timeline to a freehand

  1. Select image Layouts > image Timeline.
  2. Select anywhere on the canvas to add a timeline.

The timeline is created within a viewpoint along with a table view. Within a single viewpoint you can add multiple views of the same data.

Create multiple views in the same viewpoint

When you add a view, such as a table, a viewpoint is created. Within the viewpoint, you can add separate views of the same data.

By adding multiple views, you can sort, filter, and analyze the same information in different ways. Changes you make to properties carry through all views in the viewpoint.

  1. Select + to add a new view.
  2. Name the view to reflect its purpose.
  3. Filter and sort the data as necessary.

Edit tasks in a timeline

To edit the title or the properties of a task in your timeline, double-click the task. A side panel with the title and all the task properties opens in the top right corner of the timeline.

Add properties and tags

To add new properties or tags to a task, add a new row to the table view. Read more about tables in this article: Create tables.

Filter, sort, and group

Apply different filters and sorting by using the options in the top right corner of the timeline. Filter, sort, and group by the different tasks properties and tags.

You can also select different timeline views. Choose between days, weeks, months, quarters, and years.

Add new date setups

Create new date setups within a timeline to better plan your project and enable visibility into due dates for all people involved in a cross-functional project. Use date setups when mapping tasks for different teams or milestones.

To create or select a new timeline setup:

  1. Select ••• More > Timeline setup.
  2. Select the Start Date or Due Date dropdown, and then select a new option. To create a new date setup, select Create new date property.

When you create a new date setup, a new date field is created and added to the tasks.

Compatibility with other smart objects

Timelines are compatible with other smart objects.

Assign people

Add the people smart object to the canvas. Drag a person sticker out of the main smart object to the task. The person's avatar is added to the task.

Convert a card to a timeline task

Cards disappear once added to a timeline

If you drag a card to a timeline, the card disappears and can't be recovered.

If you use cards, convert them into timeline tasks by dragging and dropping the cards on the timeline. All the card properties map to the proper fields in the task side panel. If the cards contain new properties, they're added to the task fields.

Only compatible with generic cards

Only generic cards can be dragged to a table. Jira, Asana, Trello, and Azure DevOps cards are not supported.

Delete a timeline

To delete a timeline, you can either delete a single timeline, or the entire viewpoint.

Delete a single timeline

To delete a single timeline, select the timeline. At the far right, select ••• More > Delete view.

Delete the entire viewpoint

To delete the entire viewpoint, you must use the contextual menu.

  1. Select the viewpoint.
  2. In the contextual menu, select ••• More > Delete.
Contextual menu always deletes entire viewpoint

Using Delete in the contextual menu always deletes the entire viewpoint. For example, if you highlight a task and use the contextual menu, it will still delete the entire viewpoint.
