Screen as Overlay not working properly

I have a prototype that was working just fine up until a couple of days ago.

We are attempting to replicate a mega-menu and have overlays on top of overlays. 

As of late last week, the second set of overlays are not interactive and the first overlay will no longer close.

We haven't made any changes to the prototype. Have there been changes to how Screen as Overlay is handled w/in InVision?

Sorry to hear that the "Screen as Overlay" setting isn't working properly for you. To get a better idea of what might be causing this issue, can you please provide some additional information?:

  1. A screenshot of your "About this Mac" overview or other OS details
  2. Your browser details which you can find here  
  3. A screencast or screenshot(s) displaying the issue
  4. How was your prototype created? (ie. Sketch and synced with Craft)
  5. Sometimes we'll see issues with a browser passing outdated data, which can be the root of odd behavior seen in a prototype.  Can I have you check for issue you see with an overlay when signed into an incognito window or another browser?
  6. If this issue persists could you provide us screencast showing what is happening?

I also have a very similar problem.

I have a menu that opens several overlays in a typical drop-down format on hover. Each overlay is a duplicate of the entire menu, but with one drop down open. If the user moves the mouse outside the "drop down"-part of the overlay, I have set areas to link back/close on hover inside each overlay or link to other drop down overlays.

This worked perfectly fine until recently. Now the same overlays will not close like it used to do. It seems back/close on hover does not work inside screens that are used as overlays any more.

I will maybe try to change how I use overlays to fix this now, but it is clear that something changed in the way overlays work in Invision.

I'm terribly sorry for the trouble you're experiencing, and for the inconvenience this is causing. So that I can better assist, I just need to gather a few additional details from you:

  1. What product was used to create your prototype? (Studio, Craft, web app)
  2. Would you mind sharing a screen recording that shows the issue? We'd be happy to create a ticket to engage further on this if there is some content sensitivity in your prototype.
  3. Does the same issue occur while using an incognito or private window?

Having those details will provide a great starting point to determine the best method of assisting you further.

I found out more about the issue:

It seems buttons/fields inside overlays does not work anymore. Neither on hover or on click. The action in the overlay is ignored, and instead actions/buttons under the overlay is used if there are any.

I use Sketch to make the artboards, and upload using Craft plugin. I set all actions inside the Invision webtool, not app. I found this method to be least confusing ;)

It is a bit difficult to show this in a movie since it involves switching between multiple overlays opening on hover on the same screen, at the same time inside the overlays there are click and hover actions. The only visible way to tell there is a bug is that the overlays will no longer close as usual (with a back/close link). The same problem happens when opening the prototype with a public share link.

My prototype worked perfectly before Christmas. Something has been changed on your part recently that has caused this bug.

Thanks so much for sharing the screencast, that's super helpful! To troubleshoot this further, can you please open an incognito/private mode window and try interacting with those hotspots there? If the issue persists in the incognito mode, can you please share your browser and OS details which you can gather by clicking here?

Yes the problem persists in incognito mode when opening a public share link.

I'm having this issue again - all the buttons within the overlays aren't interactive anymore. It was working a couple days ago though. Any update on this issue?

Hi all,

Thanks for reaching out on this! We discovered an issue earlier this week with overlay hotspots not triggering in 'Play' mode.

I'm happy to share our engineers released a fix for this yesterday so we believe you should no longer run into this issue. We're terribly sorry for the hiccup!

  • If you try accessing your prototype via a private/incognito window, does the issue persist? 
  • Could you please confirm your browser and OS details by going to www.whatsmybrowser.org, clicking the “Copy” button, and pasting the link it gives you into your reply?
  • Were overlays created in the web app, or via Craft in Sketch?

Same answers as all other users who reported the problem for the past year and more.

- no I don't share screenshot and video about work under NDA.

- no, incognito makes no difference.

- all browsers, OS big sur

- website app

Hi Raynor,

Sorry I can't share any screenshots due to confidentiality. I am using Chrome 89. I've also tried Safari, still doesn't work. 

The overlays were created in the web app. 

Could you look into this issue as soon as possible please? I had to push my user testings to next week because of it.

Hi, 

I'm experiencing the same issue that everyone in this thread is having - linking from overlay to another overlay does not work anymore and this is affecting all of my prototypes that are built using this method. I have tried in multiple browsers/incognito mode and the issues persist.
