View prototype in landscape mode on tablet

Hi,

I am building a prototype via inVision Studio in 1920x1080 and want to view this prototype on my Samsung Tab a via the inVision app. But the app shows me the prototype only in portrait mode, even if I lock the tablet orientation to landscape mode.
Is there no way to show the prototype in the right orientation on a tablet?

Thanks

Hello,

I am experiencing the same issue. I create a tablet protoype in sketch IN PORTRAIT - it displays in the web application properly, however, when I open on a tablet, the prototype appears in landscape. I have updated, restarted, changed the orientation of the 'type'. Still getting an unusable prototype on the device.

Please assist.

I really do not get what is discussed here anymore.

The problem is, that the iOS app does not run in landscape mode. It simply ignores the devices orientation. You can turn your device around like you want to - it does not change anything. It's absolutely not affecting anything if you change the prototype mode - because: the app ignores landscape.

I really do not understand why you still try to explain about prototype modes if the iOS App just ignores the devices orientation.

Dear InVisin team,

U really need to work on this pls! I have a meeting with client on 25th Sep. It is „to be or not to be” and I needed to show the prototype on an iPad...
or someone here will recommend me any other Software to show my Sketch prototype ??

Hey @Przemek

If it's urgent, build your prototype with sketchs built in prototype tool.

https://www.sketch.com/docs/prototyping/

You can make a walkthrough with your client using the Sketch Mirror app.

I am also having the same issue where my prototype is now locked in landscape mode when I try and run tests on my iPad via the app. I have set my orientation to iPad-Portrait in the prototype settings, but it will only show the screens in landscape. I updated to the most recent iOS version and am running this on an iPad Pro (10.5inch).

Beth and Shaina,

Thank you very much for keeping us updated and for your sympathy. I have been following this hoping to hear of an update to the app. But it is now October and still no solution? I am running v2.8.8 on iPad but the latest version, 2.9, seems to mention only iOS fixes and not iPadOS. Yet, v2.7.3 on my phone seems to support landscape just fine. Further, on both my iPad AND iPhone I can’t seem to update to the latest version. No matter how many timeS I “update” in the App Store, it doesn’t install the latest version and keeps prompting me to update, even if I quit all apps and restart the device.

Also, please add to this issue that Freehand is also affected, this is extremely frustrating that I can’t use landscape with an Apple Pencil in a drawing app. Huge miss when Miro and Mural are encroaching. I want to stay in one environment. Please help me, I don’t want to switch to another tool!

Back to „normal“. Latest update done yesterday, iOS13. iPad Pro.

Device orientation is ignored by the app and prototypes are shown in portrait. At least it‘s consistent again. Consistently wrong, but consistent.
Let‘s teach the app to rotate again (based on the device)..\o/

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear that you're continuing to encounter issues on the latest version of the app. Can you please clarify whether you're attempting to view a Studio or non-Studio prototype in the app?

Additionally, can you please provide a screencast or screenshots of the issues you've mentioned above?

Look forward to hearing back,

Shaina

I’m also having this issue on an iPad Pro 11 with the latest InVision app.  The app simply ignores the orientation of the tablet, and always displays in portrait mode.  Even the login screen.  I would upload a screen shot, but this site limits them to 2 MB which is less than a screen shot on an iPad Pro.  It’s surprising how long this issue has been open, reported repeatedly, without a resolution.

I can't believe the arrogance with which this subject is being dealt with.

I'm not sure how I'm going to roll out InVision further in the group (from currently 60 to quickly over 120 users) with such a support.

That there can always be problems, especially with software, is clear to all of us.

But half a year later, a function that worked great before is still broken.🤬

Hey all,

The issues originally discussed in this thread have been resolved. Please make sure that you're on the most current version of the mobile app, and that your prototype is set to a tablet type with the orientation set up for Landscape.

In order to replicate this behavior yourself, you will want to confirm that your tablet prototype is set up in Landscape orientation, and then remove it from the iOS app by selecting the "remove from device" menu option in the iOS app. Once you have done this, you can try opening the prototype on your device again and it should download for you and rotate as expected.

To be clear, prototypes do not currently have the ability to auto-rotate when rotating your device. If this is what you're looking for, please let me know and I'm happy to add your feedback for this feature request.

For those still running into issues with getting their prototype to rotate to the proper orientation in the app, can you please provide some additional information?:

  1. Your device and mobile OS specs
  2. The version of the InVision mobile app that you're running
  3. A screenshot displaying the issue(s) you're seeing
  4. A screenshot of your prototype's orientation settings

Hope some of this information helps! I look forward to hearing back from each of you that still need some assistance on this issue.

Thanks for hanging in there,

Shaina

I'm am already running InVision iOS App version 2.9.1 (634), which according to the version history, is the latest version.

To be clear, the entire app does not recognize the device's orientation.  Before I ever get to one of my prototypes, the login screen, Home, Conversations, and About are all displayed entirely in portrait mode, even though I have an Apple Smart Keyboard attached and every other app I have is working perfectly fine in landscape mode.  This is not an issue with my prototype's orientation settings.  This is a problem with the core InVision App not honoring the orientation of the device.

Our team is also starting to use Figma, and our InVision renewal is coming up soon.  I too am surprised and disappointed by the responses to this thread.

Hey Bryan,

Mike from InVision here. We are really sorry to hear you're experiencing these troubles as well. We are also terribly sorry for the troubles this has caused you and everyone else on this thread.

At this point, we would like to have our Support team take a deeper look into why this is happening. Once they have had a chance to review, they will be in touch. So keep your eyes open for a response from them.

Again, we apologize for the disruption this has created. It's certainly not the information we want to hear and will be bringing this thread to the attention of our Product team.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We're here to help.

Best,

Mike

I‘ve reported this issue six month ago. While I understand it can be confusing, because the OP was talking about InVision studio mirroring, I think it‘s now clear, that it‘s about normal prototypes uploaded from sketch to InVision.

I‘ve pointed out three months ago, that the devices orientation in the app is ignored, while every other app behaves normal. My whole Design Team had (and has) still the exact same issue.

We could not show any prototype on final devices for the last half year.

Hi!

it looks its still not fixed. I'm on the Invision Studio Desktop App Version 1.25.1-B3259 and iOS App 2.9.1.

In the desktop App I can see the prototype in landscape... but in the iOS App yo can't see it landscape, it shows you only portrait.

in my case, my App is meant to be only in Landscape mode... and all the Artboards are like this... that's the only configuration of the project I can see... Help please!

A screen shot of the settings in Studio App and one screen shoot of the iOS "Test"...

I am running into the same problem on InVision Studio. I can not have the prototype viewed in landscape. It automatically shows in portrait and crops the prototype. When will this be fixed? We have user testing on the 20th and need to know if I should rebuild each prototype in another program.

Hi Jeremy,

I am so sorry to hear you are also running into this issue and completely understand how frustrating it is to wait for a fix. Thankfully, our Engineering team is indeed aware of the issue but unfortunately we don’t have an immediate fix available. However, this is an issue that I will notify our Community Moderator to raise in the next Product meeting.

In the meantime, our Support team would certainly be more than happy to investigate this with you. If this is something you would like to move forward with, please provide the following details:

  1. Your device and mobile OS specs
  2. The version of the InVision mobile app that you're running
  3. A screenshot displaying the issue(s) you're seeing
  4. A screenshot of your prototype's orientation settings

Again, I apologize for any frustration and disruption that this issue is causing you. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this one here shortly.

Thanks for hanging in there,

Mike

For anyone reading this forum and running into the same problem:

The current workaround that I have found if you have already made your prototype is to rotate everything within each individual artboard, and update the artboard size from portrait to landscape. It's not ideal, but it is the quickest fix I found.

Great Jeremy! that's a way... not ideal but it worked and now I can use the Invision Mobile App with my landscape orientated prototype by just switching the phone's orientation... cause the Invision App doesn't mandate to that.

What I was doing, as Invision guys advice me to, was to publish a public link and then and then access to it throw a web browser app in the phone and put it on the home screen.... you see the bars of the "web page" but also works if you don't have much scrolling.

I confirm that the landscape mode finally worked for me on iPad Air 2, iPadOS 13.3, InVision app version 2.10.2 (642). However, the app didn't rotate while app was running. To see it in the landscape mode,

  1. I had to first kill the session that was already started in the portrait mode
  2. Rotate the iPad to landscape while on the home screen, so the home screen is displayed in landscape
  3. Then start the app

The user experience is still very rough and not well polished, but at least I can see the prototype in its intended mode, so I welcome this update!

Regards,

Hyong

I encountered the issue while installing inVision on my Galaxy Tab A 10.1.

Quickly running through the thread I've noticed a pattern of polite responses from support with offers to open a ticket on someone's behalf.

The issue seems to be resolved for iOS but not for android. So for those who rather try out a workaround rather than receiving polite responses from support I suggest installing Rotation Control which forces an orientation. I've been playing for a few minutes with this solution and though it's not perfect it gets the job done.

  1. Download Rotation Control
    https://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-force-landscape-or-portrait-mode-in-apps-like-Instagram-and-others-Android_id78439

  2. Start the app and check "Start on boot"
  3. Slide the options screen and a new orientation strip will be visible
  4. Click the first icon on the right
  5. Open your inVision app

Thank you for taking the time to share your workaround, Guy!

As a point of clarification, prototypes in the Android app can be viewed in landscape mode if the type is set to mobile or tablet, and the orientation is set to landscape. Here's how you do it: How do I change my prototype type or orientation?

Cheers,
Laura

I'm still wondering if the problem has been fixed so I can just use landscape for specific artboard? I'm currenly designing a video platform which I only need to use landscape when the video is playing not for every artboard

Hi Arief,

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback about making our product better. Your suggestion to allow responsive prototypes that include both mobile and desktop versions within a single prototype is a potential feature that our Product team is tracking. They're monitoring interest and reviewing whether we should add this functionality to our product.

We've let our Product team know that you're interested in this feature and I've gone ahead and added your vote so they can factor that into their product strategy.

Cheers,

Camille
