DSM won't let me update a symbol

I think I messed up when I initially uploaded some stuff into DSM.

I added some artboards that contained header symbols, but I did not upload the header symbols themselves to DSM. I know that DSM does still take them in somehow, but they're in the background and not available for me to drag into sketch from DSM.

So I'm trying to remedy this by uploading the header symbols into DSM. Problem is, DSM is clinging to the old versions that were initially uploaded from within another artboard. So they keep reverting to the old version. I've tried removing them from every artboard within DSM so I could start over, but that didn't help.

How can I force DSM to use the new version of the symbol I'm uploading, instead of the old version? Is there any way I can get any insight into the symbols that tag-along in the background when other things are uploaded?

Hi Kelly,

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with symbols displaying correctly in DSM. To get a better idea of what’s happening on your end, I’d like to ask for a few more details.

  1. What version of DSM are you using? Click on the Craft icon in your toolbar, and hover over DSM to see the version
  2. What version of Sketch are you using?
  3. Could you please provide a screenshot or screencast displaying this issue?

To confirm, you're deleting symbols from DSM, then trying to import new symbols but the older versions of these deleted symbols are still showing in your DSM?

Upon first syncing items from DSM into Sketch, you should have received a pop-up modal with the following message:

Something to pay particular attention to is #2 on the dialogue box above. If there're symbols which has the same size as any of the nested symbols and can be used as potential overrides, it will add those symbols to the document too, so if you go to DSM plugin in Sketch > click drop down next to your library > "Manage Symbols", you should be able to see all the other symbols that are still stored in DSM, when you upload a symbol to DSM, DSM syncs all the nested symbols and overrides so it automatically uploads its entire dependency tree with it. You can select those symbols that you don't want and delete them under "Manage Symbols".

Please let me know if this helps.

Look forward to hearing back,
