Echo and Home

I now have an Amazon Echo Dot and a Google Home Mini and I have no idea what to do with them.

Anything cool and design-y i can do? Anything at all other than use them as egg timers?

Any ideas!?

Hi Owen

That is awesome and you got both. Wow!

Well not sure what cool design-y stuff it can do but I know you can setup some amazing tunes to assist you in doing design-y stuff or ask it to find some great design talks on YouTube etc.

I am sure you have done this already but will share these articles anyway:

What are you currently using them for now?

Hey Michéle,

Even better I got both for free!

Right now I use my Echo Dot (the Google Home Mini is still in the box) as a glorified egg timer and something to read out audible while I cook/clean the house. I did use it to order Ubers but the voice ux isnt there yet so I reverted back to my phone. But thats it really. I cant seem to find any other use for them. It feels like a waste almost.

Im reluctant to take out the Google Home Mini out the box until I can justify opening it.

Thanks for links! Didnt even realise that some of those where doable.

Owen - I have several Minis and use them constantly. Here are the ways I've found most helpful:

  • Glorified egg timer. There's really no way around this! The benefit over a physical egg timer is that you can have several at one time and name them individually. I primarily use them for when I'm cooking and doing laundry at the same time. I've avoided burnt meals and forgotten clothes this way.
  • Routines. For the Google Mini you can create these through the Home app. I have standards ones like "I'm home" and "Good night" which turn on and off lights respectively, give me tomorrow's weather, and ask when I want to wake up. There are also fun ones like "Merry Christmas." For that one I set my smart Christmas lights to turn on, put a yule log on the tv, and play Christmas music through all my speakers. There a ton of useful combos out there - here's an article for both your devices.
  • Recipes. Honestly I've only tried this for simple recipes, but it was seamless.

Hope this helps!

There are a ton of cool ways to use IFTTT with your Alexa. Check them out here.

This groceries hack is also supremely cool.

Hi Owen, I have an Echo Dot, and I love it but I found it more useful when I integrate some other gadgets like the light bulbs that I can program at certain hours of the afternoon, or when there is no one at home and also because he reads me the books that I have the kindle exactly where I left them marked, and well in an emergency in which my husband could not get up off the ground, he asked Alexa to call me on phone and she did it.
