Foldable devices... What do you think?

This is a really hot topic right now in the world and I would really like to get some of your input in this regard.

- What are your thoughts on foldable devices?

- Would you get one and why?

- What does this mean for you when it comes to designing a foldable mobile experience?

Hope you are doing well and can't wait to see your feedback. Stay awesome!

Hey Michéle - I personally think this is a really interesting area. As a Designers, it's always interesting when new interaction pattern need to be accounted for.

At this stage though, I still feel it will need time to discover if there is a market for this type of device before spending too much time thinking about potential design aspects. I've seen a few mobile innovations disappear due to lack of demand.

In regard to your question on if I'd get one of these devices myself—I'm always on the lookout for an ideal digital sketching device, having a single option that could move from a wider, 📝 sketch friendly device to a compact communications tool could be ideal for my own workflow so will be following the progress of these devices closely 🙂

    ... and related to this ⤴️ I though that this recent patent from Apple was an interesting development;

In many ways, this type of device would offer the same interaction patterns as a fold-able mobile device, linked touch-screens offering multiple uses - so really interested to see how this plays out 🙂

    Hi Rob

Thanks so much for your very valid point of view.

One thing is for certain, the rest of this year is going to be very interesting. Appreciate that you shared what you currently or want to use this technology for and what makes sense to you.

Appreciate the share of the article around Apple patent. This is something I have also been following interested to see the outcome.

Hoping more post so we can get more point of views.

    Have a great weekend!

Okay, think it been a good time to leave this open. My perspective is I can not wait to see the outcome. Whenever something like this happens for me I like to sit and watch the pupil and how they use these devices and their feedback thereof. In my view, I can find uses for it but I feel that this is going to do for the future is to introduce newly learnt behaviours going forward. So I am excited about this.

    Hi Mikele!

I actually had to google "foldable devices" as i thought you meant Sidekick lol - I think this new device is very interesting! I'd love to see where this goes. I'm not sure who their demographic is and I can't really think of anybody needing a foldable device. Seems to be that they're trying to recreate the experience of a book, but digitally.

Technology is always changing and moving forward, to me it seems a step back and trying to recreate the experience of using a book? I don't think I'm their demographic, but I said the same thing of Apple's touch bar Mac and now I'm used to it and like it.  I don't think I would get one since to me it'd be overkill of home devices, but I'm more interested in learning more about it and designing for it! I might change my mind :)

    Hi Mikele,

Im a little on the fence about this.

While im really excited a new dimension of UI and UX could be uncovered and the largely unexplored possibilities that this could hold is thrilling! New patterns, UI, interactions and new experiences.

Personally Im holding off getting excited on this for now, while Im sceptical as to whether this will be a feature for phones and such. What I am excited about is how this influences things like ereaders, tablets and ebooks. I think it could be used really well in those spaces when the technology is explored and developed more. It could even captivate a few more people leaning on the edge of ereaders but like the feel of a book. A foldable ereader does give a bit more of a nod to a book after all.

I do worry that its seen as a gimmick but time will tell!

I wouldnt look for a foldable phone device but I would so get a foldable ereader.

    Hi Lala

Thanks so much for your input and making me laugh :)

I am on the same page. I am also just as curious to see what the market feedback will be and hopefully if any of the organisations that are investing in the development of this new technology will share any insights.

Future is so bright it's hurting my eyes lol.

    Stay awesome!

    Hi Owen

Loving the input and yes, I agree 100%.

Interestingly enough majority of people that have reached out to me are also on the fence. I think we are all waiting in anticipation to see what this all means for mankind. I know I am excited to see how this technology gets applied in other applications and see the use. Very interesting times.

Thanks again for your input and have a great day :)

As a follow up to this conversation—was interested to see recently that Google might be moving into the foldable device space.

Would be an interesting development if Android offered more support for these types of devices.
