Studio for Windows Update

Hey all! I wanted to drop a note in here about Studio for Windows. We get multiple posts and Support tickets asking what we're doing with Windows, and if it's coming. The answer is yes, it is definitely coming. So why the delay? There a few reasons:

1. We needed to focus on getting the core features right in a more controlled environment (Mac has a lot less variety in types of machines and configurations than Windows).
2. We needed to figure out our our process internally for triaging large amounts of bug reports. Doing this with one platform at a time was safer than two.
3. There were some unique issues with Windows which we didn't see on Mac. This required more time to fix.

Thank you for your patience. We hope it's worth the wait!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to follow up on this thread and thank you all for your feedback. Today we’re happy to introduce the first version of Studio for Windows! Studio for Windows has been our most requested feature to date, and we appreciate your patience as our team has been hard at work to bring a feature-rich and performant experience to creative community across Mac and Windows.

From the start, multi-platform support has been an important part of the Studio roadmap. Our Windows app comes with the same powerful feature set that’s available for Mac, so no matter which OS you choose, you can design, prototype, and animate all in one place.

This is just the beginning of our journey, and we can’t wait to hear your feedback as we continue to make your experience the best yet.

Hi Sergio,

I'm happy to see you're also looking forward to Studio being released on Windows. We're almost there!

I wish I could provide you with a definite release date, but we don't have an ETA at the moment.  So sorry about that! However, the good news is that you can sign up here to be informed as soon as it's ready for early access!

Thanks for remaining patient with this process.

Best,

Shaina

Hi Shaina,

I feel it pertinent to mention something that you are hopefully aware of, but still seems to be missing when talking about the motivations for launching on Windows.

Sketch and other Mac only tools have dominated in the design space for some time now. A space that Studio is looking to snag a piece of. Windows users by contrast have very few options. Had you released the Windows version of the app first you would have been tapping into a market that has been begging for a solid sketch alternative for sometime now. (Outside of Adobe XD)

While the environment is more controlled on the Mac Platform, all the issues you will encounter with windows and variable hardware will still arise. That means that the by not releasing sooner, and starting to work through those, Studio will be in beta longer overall. (Unless you release Studio for Mac fully and then start a Windows Beta independently, but I think that would be confusing for your user base.)

Anyway, I think the sooner your team can provide even a rough timeline for Windows release the better your chance for adoption. Windows designers can only hold out so long before they will be forced to choose a different primary design tool.

Hi Liv,

Thanks for providing your feedback here! Multi-platform support has been a very important part of Studio’s roadmap for our team from the very start. We’ve carefully chosen a scalable architecture and tech stack that enables us to simultaneously develop both Mac and Windows versions of the Studio tool in parity. We don’t believe in second-tier users and environments when it comes to screen design tooling. Everyone deserves a screen design tool that fits their workflow regardless of operating system.

While I'm unable to provide a roadmap at this time, you can sign up here to be notified when Studio Early Access begins for Windows users: InVision Studio Windows Early Access

I will also be opening a ticket on your behalf to track your vote for Studio for Windows, as well as sharing your feedback with our Studio Product team. Please look for a message confirming your vote soon.

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina

Hi Shaina

I feel that every time every software /1st creation or updates go to apple first then other operating systems(might be apple is big client) is the reason. We are waiting for studio in Windows.

Is there any any specific time period given for this?

Hi Nitin and Matthew,

Our engineering team has been carefully building a scalable architecture and tech stack that enables us to simultaneously develop Mac and Windows versions of the Studio tool. This effort, which is no small feat, takes time—especially as we’re laser focused on developing the best experiences for both our Mac and PC audience.

Now that Studio 1.0 for Mac has been released, the team will begin closely addressing Mac input, while applying the same level of development support for PC. There is much greater diversity/variance in the amount of Windows hardware configurations out there relative to the more restricted subset of Mac configurations. From a development, support, and trouble-shooting perspective this makes identifying problems and support efforts significantly more complex and time-intensive.

I will be sure to keep you posted as we have meaningful updates on Windows progress to share. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding. We sincerely appreciate your patience throughout this journey.

As mentioned above, while I'm unable to provide a roadmap at this time, you can sign up here to be notified when Studio Early Access begins for Windows users: InVision Studio Windows Early Access.

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina

I love the tools and the usability, but I wonder how things are going with "laser focused on developing the best experiences for both our Mac and PC audience".

You wrote that you will keep us posted as you will have meaningful updates on Windows progress. Does the silence mean there are no meaningful updates being made?

Really can't wait, but starting do doubt Windows version is even being worked on :(

Any guesstimates?

Hi Slava,

Thanks for following up on this thread. Now that Studio 1.0 for Mac has been released, the team will begin closely addressing Mac input, while applying the same level of development support for Windows.

There is much greater diversity/variance in the amount of Windows hardware configurations out there relative to the more restricted subset of Mac configurations. From a development, support, and troubleshooting perspective this makes identifying problems and support efforts significantly more complex and time-intensive, that is why it's taking us longer to get the PC version good to go.

For now, I will open a ticket on your behalf to track your interest for Studio for Windows so you’ll be the first to know when we’re ready!

I'm sorry that I cannot offer any specific dates just yet. Let me know if you've got any further questions about this at all.

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina

"Coming Soon" does not mean anything these days. Have a look at Shaina's replies over the entire thread. She rehashes the same phrases over and over. I was part of the Early Access for Mac and I promise you when I say, the Windows version has been highly anticipated by my teams. However, the "coming soon" almost had people excited. Not anymore.

InVision keeps people hanging so that they can stay relevant. Over promise and no delivery. InVision has more features in their plugins for sketch than what they have in Studio. The Auto Animate was relevant, and now, not so much. As the Adobe XD team has promised and stayed true to their word, that they will add the features that the community wants/needs and so they are getting to a point where Studio is no longer a high-end dream, but just some software that we have tried and weren't satisfied.

Making promises obviously means very little to this company.

Stay Relevant - Stay Truthful!

You are nothing without the community. It's about time you guys realise it. And sorry if the truth hurts. But we can't afford trusting InVision's word anymore.

Oh and I have a screen shot of this post. Let's see if they mute me or delete my post.. Can make for a great social stream.

Hey Andre,

My name is Beth, and I’m the InVision Community Manager. I wanted to thank you for taking time to post here about your frustration around the wait for Studio for Windows. Shaina alerted me to this post so I could escalate your feedback to the Studio team directly.

We definitely understand the excitement and anxiousness to get ahold of Studio for Windows, and we also understand the frustration caused by the delay. A release date for the early access Windows version hasn't yet been finalized. As soon as you can get your hands on it, we'll be sure to let you know. I wish I more detail for you at this time.

As some Windows build proof-of-life, here’s a recent (though not from the past few weeks) recording of Studio on Windows.

I can assure you that we don't delete or mute posts unless they don't comply with our Community Guidelines. We welcome all feedback from our users, and we value the trust of our community of InVision users! This is why Shaina, our Community moderator, continues to raise the comments in this thread (and others) with our Studio Product Team each week.

Our Engineers are hard at work on Studio for Windows, and we’re very eager to launch it to our customers.

We understand the wait hasn't been easy, and we appreciate you hanging in there with us.

Thanks,
Beth

Beth, even though I understand that you may have to solve a certain amount of challenges to open up Studio for Windows users, I completely agree with Andre. When you or any other InVision representative say that you "understand" or "working hard", it no longer has any weight. There is no more trust in the claims. This happens because you have continuously set certain expectations without meeting them.

I happen to dive into psychology, so it's perfectly logical for me that what you are doing breaks trust. But, since you are making it worse by giving more empty promises, I think it would be valuable for you to share my understanding of "trust" and "a brand". Trust is basically the predictability of a desired outcome. You build this predictability by letting people experience your behavior, so they can later project the same behavior onto future scenarios. Now imagine how many times you have let people experience promise + no followup so far... What do you think people will fill in, when predicting your behavior pattern: promise + ... ?

"A brand" sums up to a gut feeling about what customers can expect from an organization. That gut feeling is a mix of acquired associations and experiences. You probably do not realize it enough, but that huge delay and trust loss are severely poisoning your brand.

There is also a pure practical side of things. Designers out there are making plans, prioritizing, delaying parts of their work, having conversations with CEO's about how things could be, but day after day, month after month there is still no Studio for Windows and no ETA.

By the way, the "recent" proof of life you posted is from 5 months ago. That just looks like another red flag to me.

Now I won't leave you without sharing what I think would help the situation. I suggest to talk to the decision maker(s) within your organization to come up with a unambiguous and realistic decision on whether and when to set a Windows milestone. If you are not going to publish it, be clear about it. If you are, be clear about it, set a date and follow up.

Hi Slava, Andre, & everyone else on the thread,

My name is Eric and I'm a Product Manager on Studio. Just jumping in here to provide some additional info.

First of all, I know it sounds a little empty, but we truly do understand your perspective and we know we have a lot to do to rebuild trust. While I am not in a position to make a release announcement in this thread, the team is actively working toward a Windows release. We have every intention of shipping a Windows version of Studio — we simply need to make sure it meets our internal quality standards and the standards to which our dedicated users hold us.

We shared the Windows version with a very small number of external users late last year and have been working to address their feedback. The plan is to make the Windows version available to another (slightly larger) group of external users in early February. Their initial feedback will be part of our decision on when we make it available to everyone.

I know it's not exactly what you all want to hear, but I hope this context helps a little. We want this to happen as much as you all do! I appreciate your candid feedback and continued patience, really.

Wow, so much drama.

As I understand, Studio is not Snapchat, it's not a game. Nobody wants a poorly developed app if I have to WORK with it. It's completely understandable to not release a 1.0 version to the public.

But... you can do the Adobe way. Adobe release XD (Previously Project Comet / Adobe Experience Design) and release an alpha stage app. Make us part of the development, let us try and break things. A lot of people are looking for a Sketch replacement. Invision is kind of late to the game, but building a bond with your users could work.

1

Eric Schurter
InVision ambassador Eric Schurter, InVision Employee , ambassador

Thanks for understanding, Francisco! I completely agree — no one wants to do real work in a tool that isn't ready.

As for a public beta (or alpha) release, we did much of the development of the Mac version out in the open like that. But this time around, we have decided to share the Windows version with a selection of early users for validation instead of making that program open to everyone. There are a lot of reasons behind that, but I realize that can feel very exclusive. Our hope is that this will ultimately get it in your hands faster and with a higher level of quality.

Eric, is there any chance you can add me to the selection of early users? I don't mind it to be broken here and there. I can promise you extensive feedback on compatibility and usability. What do you say?

Hi Slava,

Unfortunately I'm not in charge of managing that list myself, so I can't make any promises. But Shaina will reach out directly to get some info from you (your email and some details about your hardware configuration) then we'll let you know if we end up expanding the group.

Hello Eric,

I'm visiting this post almost everyday for news for the last 5 months, I know that saying this won`t do anything, but it sucks man. The wait is so long, it really feels like I should move on, as many people said already. We don`t have any news about a release date, nor a chance to participate into the beta.

Francisco M. Ferreiro
InVision ambassador Francisco M. Ferreiro , ambassador

Leonard, you need to understand that buggy software is no good for anyone. If Invision releases the windows version half-assed they could give a bad impression.
They want more than you for people to use the software. If they are holding it back you have to believe is for the better.

Francisco is not about the release, it`s all about the contact with your public, if you say you`re releasing an early access soon and the time pass by and you don`t give us any information and show the progress you have done, the problems and everything... anyway I`m sure you got my point.

I have also been waiting for more than a year for Windows version. I was writing with Twitter support, but they also have no information. I fill this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSexN2rebCAFwCouZjHUBLIN7UmhMVp5EVI8JHHM5aHaol-iDg/viewform

I'll be happy to provide a feedback for the early version. What it takes to get into the early groups of external users in early February? I work on two machines with Windows, and I can provide hardware configuration if it matters.

Hi Yanko,

Our team is still hard at work on Studio for Windows as mentioned above. I apologize, but at this time, the group of early version testers is now closed and we are unable to extend anymore invitations.

We will be sure to update this Community thread as we have any updates, as well as reach out to you individually if you have a ticket opened with our Support team on this topic.

Have a great day,

Shaina

Everyone,

I have heard through the grapevine that we should be seeing a Windows Release Candidate in the first quarter of 2020.

Hope this helps!

I think the problem is the lack of transparency. We've all (thousands of people) been waiting for a year and a half since you first presented Invision Studio. And we're all annoyed by the question to which you're changing the "last updated" date just so it doesn't appear like you've said "soon" for over a year now. I think this PR nightmare you're having, and all the badwill that goes along with it, could be solved with just a little bit of transparency. Most of us would be perfectly happy and sit quite in the boat if we knew things were moving. Maybe set up a public trello board so we can see what you're working on and the rate at which you get things done? That's what I would do to salvade this situation, because right now you're not held in high regard by Windows users, and most of us would probably jump at the first alternative that comes along.

Upon leaving whatever alpha/beta stages the Windows and Mac are in now: how lock step are updates between the two planned to be? Same day? Same week? Same quarter? Or different release/update schedules altogether per OS?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to post here and let everyone know that we did not announce that we’ll be rolling out a Windows Release Candidate in “the first quarter of 2020” as mentioned above. Please disregard that post.

Beth, the Community Manager, and I are working hard to ensure that this thread is getting in front of the Studio team on a weekly basis. As of today, we do not have “new” news about the rollout to share. Thanks for hanging in there.

Thanks,
Shaina, Community Moderator
