Potential Bug: 'Link Back / Close' prototyping function

In our projects, the 'Link Back / Close' function doesn't seem to account for interactions within a page/screen before users click/tap the 'back/close' button.

For example, take an iOS app that has a 'Settings' section in a vertical side menu. On this 'Settings' screen of the app there is a '< Back' button on the top left of the screen. On this screen, users can browse app settings and tap back or continue to dive into other sub screens within settings. Take the flows below as an example:

Flow 1:
Home screen -> Settings screen -> Tap `< Back` to go home

Flow 2:
Home screen -> Settings screen -> Notifications settings -> Tap `< Back` to go to Settings -> Tap `< Back` to go home

In Flow 1, the 'Link Back / Close' screen function works just fine but in Flow 2, it doesn't work as expected. The below happens instead

Home screen -> Settings screen -> Notifications settings -> Tap `< Back` to go to Settings -> Tap `< Back` to go home but it goes back to Notification settings.

From the surface, the function literally sends users to the last screen they saw, but in the user's perspective when they tap '< Back' they want to go back in the context of the app layout. Rather than a literally sending users to the last screen, I think the 'Link Back / Close' function should understand context much like a browser back button or a file directory back button.

If I completely missed a function that already allows for this or I'm completely off target, please do let me know.

Thanks!

Welcome to the community, Lavish!

The Link Back / Close functionality in InVision should take you back to the last screen where you came from in the prototype. For your prototype, you could probably link those Back buttons to the pages where you want your users to return to, instead of using Link Back / Close option.

Hope that helps!

Lala

Hi Lala,

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it.

I could do that but then it introduces another issue because a screen can be accessed from many areas of the app. For example, the profile in the app might be opened from the side menu or a button inside a tab menu. In this case, when we test our prototypes, and tap back from the profile screen, half the time it goes back to the wrong screen. This would be the case where I'd use the 'Link Back / Close' option but it seems to have the issue explained above.

Does this help clarify the problem?

Thanks!

Lavish

Lavish,

Yeah, I understand :)

Like mentioned above, currently the Link Back / Close functionality takes you back to the last screen where you came from in the prototype. I have made sure that the Community team is aware of this Content Awareness Link Back/Close feature request, and they will be opening a ticket for you on your behalf.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi, is this issue ever going to get addressed? It has been over a year since this was reported and even longer since this bug has existed. The Invision prototyping service has other frustrations, but this one for our needs far exceeds them all. The current Link Back / Close behavior of literally going to the last screen visited instead of to the screen that initiated the new screen is madness and makes the service almost unusable. The only work around currently is to compromise the prototype by only having actions initiate from one area or to create lots of confusing duplicate screens to achieve an otherwise basic feature.

Hi Rusty,

Thanks for reaching out on this thread. I understand how frustrating it is to wait for a fix to an issue. The Engineering team is aware of the issue but we prioritize issues based on the scope and impact of the issue. For that reason, we don’t have an immediate fix available. However, this is an issue that I will be raising in the soonest Product meetings.

In the meantime, I will open a ticket on your behalf with our Support team who will being keeping you updated on the resolution to this bug. Please keep an eye out for a message from one of our Support agents soon.

I apologize for not having better news at this time. We will be sure to provide you with any updates as we have them.

Thanks for bearing with us,

Shaina
