This is a great question and definitely an ongoing debate in our industry. I have personally dealt with a pressure on whether or not to invest my time in learning programming languages. My personal opinion is no, designers shouldn’t code, nor should they be expected to code. Are developers expected to design? Come up with creative direction? No.

With that said, I believe understanding of the impact of programming is a necessity. It also allows us to emphasize with developers, understand issues that co-workers might deal with, and attempt as best we can to discuss things in a way that is beneficial for everyone.

I think designers need to practice creating some simple webpages do they’re able to known and understand the design process to be able to communicate and empathize with developers.
