Overlay State Not Scrolling on Mobile

I have a screen set as an overlay, with "fix position of overlay" deselected, but the overlay state will not scroll. I've tested building the hotspot in both InVision and in Sketch via Craft.

Sketch is up to date: 50.2

Craft version: 1.0.64

Hi Joe,

Apologies for the troubles you're having here with overlays. Currently, with InVision, overlays screens need the same size as the parent screen, or smaller, to work as expected.

I'm going to be opening a new feature request for you to support this particular use of overlays. Please look for a message confirming your vote for this feature soon.

Hope that clears things up for you. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Have a great day,

Shaina

Can you share the link of the prototype?

I think I figured out the issue. My overlay screen is a little longer than the screen it is being set on top of.

Now to see if there is a fix or workaround. I don't want to have to lengthen the base screen just to accommodate, and I don't want this to have to be a "link to" instance instead of an overlay state. Bah...

I have the same issue: a long menu dropdown (longer than the screen, but smaller than the artboard). Without the overlay triggered, scrolling is fine, with overlay triggered, scrolling is a mess: the screen scrolls but with hickups and not to the bottom then stalls etc.

@Remco-Kalf, any chance you can share your prototype so I can see the problem?

My overlay is smaller than the parent screen with "fix position" ticked off, and still won't scroll. I am pretty sure this once worked. Any thoughts?

Hi Jessie,

Sorry to hear that you're also running into issues here. Can you please provide the following information?:

     1. What version of Sketch are you using?
     2. What version of Craft Manager are you using?
     3. What version of the Craft Sync + Prototype plugin are you using?
     4. Can you please provide a screenshot of your "About this Mac" overview?
     5. Can you please provide a screencast or screenshot displaying the issue you are encountering?
     6. When did you notice that this stopped working properly?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Shaina

Hi Shaina,

- I'm currently on the latest Sketch  - 52.1;
- Craft Manager is up to date as far as I know (1.0.720);
- Sync & prototype is 2.3.82;
- OSX Mojave 10.14 screenshot in attach.
- You can check out the issue here: https://invis.io/W2OECTTSUV7#/323622663_M_Home (click on menu; menu is "screen as overlay" with fix position ticked off; but won't scroll in browser). When I send the prototype to my phone it's behaviour is unpredictable: I would like the overlay to scroll but stop when the end is reached, but no matter how I play around with the settings, it either keeps scrolling or cuts off part of my overlay.

I recently updated all the software mentioned above; but I had this issue with the previous version of Sketch and OSx (High) Sierra too, so updating didn't fix it.

I distinctly remember that it once was possible but have no idea when it stopped working properly.

Hi Jessie,

Thank you very much for providing those details, as well as a share link to your prototype. It appears as if your overlay is working in the way it is expected. Overlays are currently only scrollable along with the parent screen. They are not currently scrollable on their own. This means that the underlying parent screen needs to be accessible in order to scroll. Please make sure that both Close on clicking outside of overlay and Fix position of overlay are unchecked in your overlay settings. Your overlay will only scroll along with the parent screen if both of those options are unchecked.

One other important thing to check here is if your menu overlay screen is currently sized at a height larger than your parent screen. If so, this would also cause your overlay to not work properly because overlays currently only scroll along with the parent screen, that means your overlay will only scroll as far as the height of the underlying screen. For this reason, we would recommend making your overlay no larger than the screens it will display on top of.

That said, our Product team is currently tracking a potential feature to allow overlays to be scrollable independently of the parent screen and I believe, ultimately, that would help you here. Please let me know if you would like me to open a ticket on your behalf to track your vote for this feature, and I will be happy to do so.

Have a great day!

Shaina

I filled a complain about this behavior in 2016!!
I am baffled to see it is still not fixed...

Hi Margot,

Thank you for taking the time to continuously raise this issue with our Support team and for voicing your concerns here in Community. I have been working with your Support agents on this issue, and have made them aware of your comment here in Community. As one of our agents noted in your ticket, currently the parent screen needs to be larger (both in width and length) than the overlay screen in order for the overlay to work correctly. Please let us know if this adjustments helps.

After reviewing your past tickets, I do see that you have reached out for updates on the feature request to allow overlays to scroll independently from the parent screen. I understand how frustrating it can be to wait for features like this, and I want to apologize for the wait here. However, I would like to assure you that our Product team is aware of the need for this feature, but they continually prioritize issues based on the scope and impact of the issue.

Part of my job is to take important threads from Community to meetings with relevant Product Managers to discuss the struggles our customers are having. I will be sure to raise your concerns and request in my next meeting with this PM. I will also keep an eye on your open ticket and continue to collaborate with your Support agents.

Thanks again for continuing to provide feedback through our various channel. Hearing from customers like you is what helps us improve our products and customer experience!

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina

I just had the same problem - trying to build a prototype that has a side menu overlay, that could scroll, and have an anchored button in the overly - but like everyone else, building this in InVision isn't possible, it's partially possible but there's issues with it which causes more question/problem for users to view and test with. So we ditched building it in InVision...

...another designer in my team saved the day and showed me how to do it in Marvel App...and hey presto it worked exactly as described!

Need to lift your game on this one InVision. As Margot said, this problem dates back to 2016! 3 years and still not a complete feature. Disappointing.

Hi Brendan,

Thanks for taking a moment to post in Community, and I’m sorry that you’re also running into issues with overlays! I understand how frustrating it can be to have to switch to another product to achieve the same effect, and we definitely want to help you be able to build this out seamlessly in InVision.

After looking into Margot’s past tickets, I’m happy to report that the feature requests dating back to 2016 have been solved. However, it sounds like overlays are still giving you trouble, so thanks again for letting us know about that.

The more recently reported feature we are currently tracking interest for which she mentions in this post is to support the use of overlay screens that are larger than or the same size as the parent screen. If this is what you’re looking for, I’m happy to open a ticket with Support on your behalf so that they can report on your interest in this feature.

Currently, the parent screen needs to be larger (both in width and length) than the overlay screen in order for the overlay to work correctly. Can you please try making that adjustment and kindly let me know if that does the trick?

I can assure you that our Support and Product teams are continuing to track the demand for these features. We try to carefully focus our development efforts on the features and fixes that will have the biggest impact upon our users’ happiness and success with the product. The Product team is continually re-evaluating priorities and determining what to target next, and so we greatly value feedback from users like you.

Again, I’m sorry for any frustration that this is causing for you and your team, and we encourage you to continue to reach out with any other issues you find that are disrupting your workflow! Thank you very much for taking the time to reach out here in Community.

Look forward to hearing back,
Shaina

Hi Shaina,

I was wondering if there had been an update on this since the feature request was raised?

I'm looking to do a scrollable overlay interaction - a user opens a modal with a scrollable list to select an item from that list and save that selection. Ideally I wanted to couple this with the slide up from bottom transition, without having a whole new screen move up from the bottom - that's the work around I'm using for now but feels pretty clunky.

If you could help that would be great.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe!

If you are using Studio, you can use advanced animations with Motion to simulate this experience. Here is an article on that. The important part to remember this this method is to include the modal outside of the artboard, so that it can link the two modal groups or layers together in the animation.

With Sketch, I think your approach is the best way!

Best,

Caitlin

Also looking to have scrolling WITHIN a fixed position overlay.  If the fixed overlay is taller than the viewport size, the bottom gets cut off with no way for the user to access the content in the overlay that is below the fold.   Note: The underlying screen is much taller than the viewport.  Marvelapp offers this "allow layer to scroll" feature fyi.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for following up here with your use case. We're currently tracking the following feature requests:

  1. To support the use of overlay screens that are larger than or the same size as the parent screen.
  2. To allow overlays to be scrollable independently from the parent screen.

If either or both of these sound like what you're looking for, please let me know and I'll happily open a ticket on your behalf.

Thanks in advance,

Shaina

Shaina Torgerson Yes exactly - in my case at the moment I am looking to do #2, but certainly #1 is a pretty common scenario that I would imagine a need to prototype at some point.   Thanks!

Thanks so much for following up to confirm, Eric! I'll get tickets opened on your behalf for each of those feature requests.

Please keep an eye out for a couple of emails confirming that we've formally tracked your feedback. Don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything else I can help with.

Have a great day,

Shaina

Ok I extended the artboard of my header symbol to the same size as the mobile menu-flyin overlay - still not scrollable. How this is an issue in 2020 is beyond me. For me this basically means that I will quit prototyping with both sketch and Invision craft and just switch to Figma, when prototyping there I never had to look at this many support issues to make basic prototype functionality working.
