Invision Studio beta: Overlays

Hi, not sure if I just can't figure out how to accomplish overlays with Studio or if the feature doesn't exist yet? For example, I want to mock up a modal window, popup alert, or a drop-down menu. When using Sketch and Craft, I could create this affect with overlays. I couldn't figure out how to do the same thing using Studio.

Hi Che-Chuen,

At this time, Overlays does not exist within Studio. However, this is a potential feature that our team is currently tracking.

I will open a ticket on your behalf so that our Support team can track your interest for Overlays in Studio. Please look for a message from them soon.

Have a great day,

Shaina

We’re currently tracking interest for this. If you’d like to add your vote for this feature, please contact Support here and voice your opinion!

This feature is absolutely VITAL to my workflow. It is the reason I'm still sticking to Sketch + Craft. It would be completely unbearable doing the kind of prototypes I need without Overlays. Every dropdown, hover state, popup, modal, etc etc. would have to be its own artboard. Imagine keeping all those artboards updated with the "base" design of the screen you are on. Sure hope the product team realize how important this feature is to an effective workflow!

BIG upvote for this

It most defiantly is a Vital feature. Very weird that the product team would remove a key feature whilst trying to bring users over from Sketch + Craft to Invision studio. I thought overlays would of been in use in nearly every Prototype created in Invision ...

A big +1 vote to get this sorted.

It would be super clever and handy if components would work like pages so one could create multiple artboards within a component. With this you could create interactions within components so they can change their appearance/state and would work as interactive components.
That would even help to provide a better overview for the main projects since You don't have to create so many artboard for smaller interactions.

Hello there,

This topic was open 8 months ago and the official answer is still "tracking interest". This is disappointing, honestly. Studio has the most powerful set of animation I've seen in any tool but lacks the simple overlay feature.

Basically if I want to do some hover states on each cell of a table, you are telling me I have to do (and maintain) a number of artwork equal to the number of cells.

Double that number with an added feedback on click.

For a dropdown with 10 choices, you are telling me I have to create 10 times the same artwork to mimic feedback on mouse position ? Creating this insane number of artwork is a pure waste of time but not as much as creating the interactions between every single one of them.

How deep is this feature in your backlog ?

Please consider it in your next, next, next-ish sprint.

Sincerely, an Invision fan.

I just asked exactly the same thing, lets hope everyone requests it so it can be added as a feature.

It would be great if we could animate components instead the need to point to an art board all the time.

Aren't components basically overlays?

Hi,

As stated above this is currently not available to do in the way you describe. Components in Studio are more like repeatable building blocks and not like a web component. The closest you could get right now would be to build another screen view that has your mocked up view with a dialogue like rectangle. You could further animate this state to make it look and act similar to a modal.

I hope that helps.

Hi Martin,

Thank you very much for adding your feedback regarding this feature here in Community! I notice that you have opened a couple of tickets about this feature which our Support team has used to add your votes to this potential feature.

We’re constantly working on improvements, and we greatly value opinions like yours. Part of my job is to take important threads from Community to meetings with relevant Product Managers to discuss the struggles our customers are having. I will be sure to raise your concerns and request in my next meeting with this PM.

Hi Alex,

Thank you very much for adding your input about this feature. I apologize for any inconvenience that this is causing for you.  In the meantime, you'd instead need to use our Sketch Craft Prototype plugin, or export your Studio artboards to PNG/JPG and manually upload to the web. This way you can use the build mode overlay option. Wish I had a more helpful immediate answer.

I'm happy to open a ticket on your behalf and track your vote for this feature. Please look for a message confirming your vote soon.

Best,

Shaina

Hi Philoup,

I appreciate you taking the time to explain in detail the functionality you are looking for in Studio. At this time, it appears as if our Support and Product teams are currently tracking interest for the ability to have multiple artboards within a Component in Studio in order to create more reusable advanced interactions such as accordions, navigations and sliders.

If this sounds like the functionality you're looking for, please let me know and I will open a ticket on your behalf tracking your vote for this feature. If you're looking for something different, please let me know.

Thanks,

Shaina

Hi Romain,

Thanks for reaching out on our Community. I understand how frustrating it is to wait for a feature to be released while our Product and Engineering teams work on a solution. Our teams prioritize issues based on the scope and impact of the issue. For that reason, we don’t have an immediate fix available, but it is certainly on our Studio team's radar as something they're working in on early in the new year.

We’re constantly working on improvements, and we greatly value opinions like yours. Part of my job is to take important threads from Community to meetings with relevant Product Managers to discuss the struggles our customers are having. I have raised your concerns about this feature request in today's meeting with our Studio Product Manager. I’m also opening a ticket on your behalf so that you can stay up to date on the status of this feature request. Please look for a message confirming your vote for this functionality soon.

In the meantime, to achieve an interaction that triggers an overlay by creating an artboard manually that serves as your base and overlay screen, and trigger that artboard using an interaction. That said, I know this is not a simple or fully encompassing workaround, and so I encourage you to keep a close eye out for further updates to the Studio application to see if this feature is introduced. Thanks again for your feedback and support for this functionality.

We believe that using InVision should be seamless and enjoyable, and we are constantly working to break down barriers in design. Hearing from customers like you is what helps make InVision products better each day. Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Have a great day,

Shaina

While you guys were tracking the interest Adobe XD released this feature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cpz2OIHYvw

Prototyping without overlays is so ridiculous I am not creating many screens / animations because it's too much additional design and maintenance work. For these reasons lack of this feature limits my results.

Please don't push me to switch to competitors.

Hi Slava,

I'm sorry but the latest update I have on this potential feature is my response to Romain above. I'm happy to open a ticket on your behalf to track your vote for this feature so that you will be notified immediately when we have any updates on this. Please look for a message confirming your vote soon.

As mentioned above, there is a workaround for this in the meantime. While we know that this is no the perfect solution, to achieve an interaction that triggers an overlay by creating an artboard manually that serves as your base and overlay screen, and trigger that artboard using an interaction.

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback regarding this functionality, and I hope to have some good news on this front soon!

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina
