Does Studio link with DSM?

The Design System Manager (DSM) intro video suggests it's possible to push and pull components from Studio to DSM and vice versa. However, in Studio I can't see a way to do this. Obviously both systems are new - perhaps the feature isn't live yet.

Is it possible to link Studio and DSM, and if so how is it done?

Thanks!

UPDATE

Thanks to each of you for reaching out. We love hearing from our users! My name is Carson and I'm a Product Manager on the DSM team.

I can assure you that we are continuing to work on a robust system for managing design systems collaboratively right inside of Studio.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide an update on the timeframe for DSM integration with Studio. However, please know that we are listening to this request, and bringing DSM to Studio is a high priority within InVision. This is an effort that both Studio and DSM product teams are prioritizing, as we bring these products together for a seamless and easy to use workflow.

All the best,
Carson Brown

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for reaching out about this in Community!

We believe that design systems should be a native part of Studio itself and are working a on a robust system for managing these collaboratively right inside of the app. While this has not yet been enabled, please keep an eye out for more information and details coming very soon on this crucially important part of Studio.

I will open a ticket on your behalf with our Support team so that they can keep you updated on this feature. Please look for a message from them soon.

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina

This is the same response we got to our ticket:

"We believe that design systems should be a native part of the tool itself and are working a on a robust system for managing these collaboratively right inside of Studio. Keep an eye out for more information and details coming very soon on this important part of Studio from our Support team."

It would be helpful to know more precisely when this area of the app is going to be improved. The ambiguity of "very soon" doesn't help us build a plan to move away from Sketch and to Studio (which we'd love to do!).

Can you give us a better sense of when this will be released?

Secondly, when you say that your plans are to provide management tools for design systems as "a native part of Studio itself" are you suggesting that the work we are putting into building out our DSM content will be lost?

Hi Matt,

At this time, we are in the very early stages of both DSM and Studio, and much of this work ties into our broader Studio efforts. Although we understand the importance of more concrete timelines, we’re not at a stage where we can provide concrete release dates on updates.

We can assure you that any work that you have put into DSM will not be lost. Our goal is to integrate DSM and Studio, and not replace DSM with something Studio-specific.

Thanks for your patience while we continue to work on improving each of our products. We appreciate you continuing to notify us of your findings in order to help us improve our products in the early stages.

Thanks,

Shaina

That being the case, we will need to continue to invest in our Sketch workflow. That will make it harder to move away from a proper release is ready.

I think everyone would appreciate a little more transparency. Even if it's on the order of the quarter in which you will have a proper release.

Hi Matt,

We appreciate your patience and feedback here. As promised, we will be sure to keep these Community threads updated with information as we receive it.

I will also bring this up in our weekly Studio meeting so that our Product Managers are aware of your comments.

Have a wonderful day,

Hey Kevin,

I agree with your assessment that there is some real potential to how InVision's imagines that Studio will work with DSM, Craft and their prototyping tools. That said:

  1. I think it's pretty unlikely that they will provide any transparency here. I wish they would, as many other people do, but their standard approach seems to be to use canned responses with generalized answers. I have found that to be true for queries related to Studio/DSM as well as their already-released products.
  2. From what I've seen of Studio, it looks like they intend to support the importing of Sketch files. If that is the case, you could adopt InVision's workflow with Sketch in lieu of Studio until Studio is ready to go, and the transition wouldn't be too painful.

That said, in order to have sufficient faith that #2 is a good route, you'd need them to definitively confirm Sketch import support for the final release, as well as some DSM release details as well, I would imagine. I'm not sure you'll get that much, do to #1.

That's kind of the point of my last post. My sense of Studio from having used it a bit is that it's an exciting product that isn't particularly close to release. That being the case, they aren't going to give us specific release dates, which to some extent is reasonable. What I find disappointing is the complete lack of transparency. Its a bummer because if releasing Studio takes as long as I would imagine it will, the lack of transparency means that those who are excited to adopt will not have the info they need to build a plan for the interim, and will go head first into another solution.

Shaina,

How does one get this special connection to the "right people to answer all of" the questions? Why is it that when we were making a decision, you let us go our own way, when for Kevin you are extending this extra gesture?

Hi Matt,

Good news! To address your earlier message, Studio already supports Sketch import. To familiarize yourself with all of the things that Studio is currently capable of, please be sure to check out our Studio Getting Started Guide here. You can find more about Sketch imports in the “Importing and Migrating Content” section of the Getting Started Guide. The Getting Started Guide is constantly updated as we release new features and UI changes.

As for your concerns about the experience you’ve had vs. Kevin, our offer to discuss with Kevin further was to determine if it would make sense to put him in touch with our Sales team to discuss our Enterprise offering if relevant or otherwise provide additional info directly within Support. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t include the product roadmap details that you’re looking for. I would be happy to put you in touch with our Sales team as well if you are interested in upgrading to an Enterprise plan and wanted to discuss further.

Please be sure to let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.

Best,

Shaina

What you offered was to connect him to a "Support team who will be able to get you connected with the right people to answer all of you and your colleague's questions and concerns." Nowhere in your message did you mention a "Sales team."

Why is it that I have been banging my head against a wall for months trying to use your software when others are provided this offer right off the bat?

Hi Matt,

Yes, that is what I replied to Kevin. However, "the right people" to answer the questions Kevin and his colleague's about InVision products in this situation is our Sales team. First Kevin will work with Support to address his questions in this post, and then our Support team will pass them onto our Sales team if necessary.

I'm sorry that our software has been causing you frustration. I can assure you that you are receiving the same level of Support as everybody else, and our Support team is working hard each and everyday to help all of our customers equally.

Best,

Shaina

Hey,

Obvious from this post that you don't plan on setting a date for release.. but just wanted to leave a comment here to add my support for integrating DSM into Invision Studio. It's one of the main things that drew me to Invsion Studio after seeing your release video, was disappointed to see it still hasn't been integrated ~6 months later.

Otherwise, great work on Invision Studio - looking forward to future features.

All the best,

Jackson

Hi Jackson,

I'm sorry that we're are unable to give a more concrete timeline for Studio feature releases at this time. However, I'm happy to open a ticket on your behalf with our Support team so that they can track your vote for this feature.

Glad to hear that you're having a great experience with Studio otherwise! Please be sure to reach out in Community with any other feature requests you may run into while using Studio.

Have a wonderful day,

Shaina
