No support exporting assets contained in symbols (still)

I've been struggling today to get assets nested inside symbols in my teams well-crafted sketch file exportable when after uploading to inVision.

I found this thread and hoped that I had an answer to my problem, but I was left with a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Not being able export assets that are nested inside of symbols is an incredible oversight on your design and engineering teams part. To put it lightly, I'm disappointed that this is even an issue since it means that I'll have to go against best practices just to make sure that our developers can access assets in an intuitive way. I'm shocked that this was brought up as an issue 6 months ago and it still hasn't been addressed.

Let's be real here for a minute. Users shouldn't have to hack around this limitation with your technology. Period.

Marking assets for export should be transparent for designers, not breaking their workflow, and developers should be able to access those assets from the screens they're in -- regardless of the asset being nested in a symbol.

If you wan't a hill to take (and solve sooner rather than later) there it is.

Hey Dominick,

Thanks for reaching out on our Community. I understand how frustrating it is to wait for a fix to an issue. The Engineering team prioritizes issues based on the scope and impact of the issue. For that reason, we don’t have an immediate fix available, but are still working hard on a resolution.

We’re constantly working on improvements, and we greatly value opinions like yours. Part of my job is to take important threads from Community to meetings with relevant Product Managers to discuss the struggles our customers are having. I will be sure to raise your concerns and request in my next meeting with this PM. I’m also opening a ticket on your behalf so that you can stay up to date on the status of this feature request. Please look for a message from our Support team soon.

We agree that using InVision should be seamless and enjoyable, and we are constantly working to break down barriers in design. Hearing from customers like you is what helps make InVision products better each day. Thank you for providing your feedback on this issue.

Have a great day,

Shaina

Next big crap from InVision and Craft!!!!

Why I must select to export layers from artboard? Why symbols checked to export from symbols are not avalible to download from assets panel in inspect?

Another case its about slice, (of course I don't why I must do it from artboard, next big crap) .... why I must slice in sketch, to export asset with transparency around icon when symbol have size which I want (of course symbol with transparency around icon)?

Hi Marcin,

We completely sympathize with the inconvenience that this is causing for you. As mentioned above, our Engineering team is aware of this issue and they are still working hard on a resolution.

I will be sure to also bring your comments from this thread to our next meeting for our Product Managers to discuss this issue even further. I will also be opening a ticket on your behalf so that you can stay up to date on the status of this feature request. Please look for a message from our Support team soon.

For now, symbols will only be able to be downloaded as assets if they are marked as exportable in the artboard that is synced. Even if a symbol is marked to be exported in the Symbols page, the symbol won't be downloadable unless it's marked to be exported on the artboard.

We understand this isn't the most optimal workaround. However, we are adding your vote to this feature request and going forward our product team will assess if this should be added in a future version of our product.

Have a great day,

Shaina

Same problem here, this is really not intuitive and a lot of effort. Zeplin implements this effortlessly.

|  I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused...

Let me make this clear, this isn't just an inconvenience: It's a blocker.

It makes delivering work incredibly counterintuitive for teams using symbol libraries and we wind up creating workarounds.

Do some user research and solve the problem.

Guys, we just started to handover a 200 screen prototype to developers. All based on symbols. Icons as symbols. Do I read it correctly there is no way to populate .svg from symbols using inspect? (other than going trough 200 screens and on each find icon and select as exportable?) I've marked as exportable all symbols, but it doesn't populate .svg into the inspect.

Per Matus’ comment above, I fail to see how 1) this is marked as “completed” when it’s clearly an issue and 2) how it’s still a problem at all nearly 2 years later.

Hello all!

So sorry for the confusion on this thread. This was marked as "completed" because the feature request has been solved that the reports above were linked to: "Include the ability to generate assets for symbols marked as exportable on the Symbols page in Sketch".

Craft Manager version 1.0.69 introduced the ability for symbol artboards marked for export to generate assets in Inspect. Our team has tested this and we can confirm that when a symbol artboard is flagged for export, if you sync an artboard containing an instance of that symbol, an asset is generated for the symbol artboard on the Assets tab. This solves the feature request in which all of the comments in this thread have been linked up to.

Please note that the latest version of Craft Manager is now 1.0.96. If you are not seeing this feature available in your version of Craft, please ensure that you're on the latest version.

If you have any questions, please don't hesistate to follow up!

Best,

Shaina

Hi Shaina,

I'm still having issues with this on Craft Manager 1.0.99, Sync + Prototype 2.3.164; Chrome 84.0.4147.89; Mac OS 10.15.4

All our icon artboards are marked as exportable in two formats on the symbols page. We have an artboard in another page with all of these exportable symbols displayed in a grid. When using Inspect to view this artboard, there are no assets available. When I added a slice to one icon artboard symbol (no changes to the 2nd page), the asset suddenly became available in Inspect.

Edit: and the icon includes a colored background for some reason instead of being transparent... 😭

This doesn't seem to match the ability you noted above for CM 1.0.69. I would add my voice to the above that this is pretty critical.

Best,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Sorry to hear that you're having issues even with the latest version of Craft Manager. In order to get a better idea of what's happening here, can you please provide some additional details?:

  1. Are you syncing your prototype from Sketch or Photoshop? Can you please also provide the version you're using?
  2. Have you attempting to uninstall and reinstall Craft Manger, then resync your prototype?
  3. Can you please provide a screencast or screenshot(s) displaying these issues?
  4. Can you please provide a screenshot of your icon not showing a transparent background as expected?

To clarify, the feature request above to include the ability to generate assets for symbols marked as exportable on the Symbols page in Sketch was released in Craft 1.0.69. Are you saying that you're not seeing that this feature is available for you?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Shaina

  1. From Sketch - Version 68 (102490), CM version noted above.
  2. I had not, but I did yesterday and it did not resolve the issue.
  3. Sorry for the formatting:

Icon with artboard marked as exportable:

Icon with slice marked as exportable:

Two icons on an artboard, neither marked as exportable:

The two icons in Inspect; only the one with the slice can be downloaded.
  4. I tried to replicate this again and wasn't able to for some reason... so I will let that one go. It was happening to all the icons, and I found several articles describing this so I know it was a behavior in the past.

Thanks!

Just an update on this for anyone who might find the thread – issue was resolved with Craft Manager 1.0.69 but later regressed which is why I'm still experiencing it. For now I'm just using slices which is fine for our small library, but it isn't easily scalable without some batch automation tools.
