DSM: Updating elements

Hi,

In the 'Updating icons and components' section of the 'Creating and Using Your DSM Library' page, it says "You can apply the changes to the element to your file by selecting the down arrow icon; this will apply all of the changes that exist in the library."

I have updated an icon, and I am pressing the button down arrow as highlighted below, but the changes are not applied - am I doing the right thing?

After some further troubleshooting with our Support team, we’ve determined that this is the intended behavior of the Design System Manager.

Currently, the ability to automatically update elements in your artboard using updated elements from DSM is limited to Symbols in your file. For example, lets say you add a non-symbol element to your DSM library such as a grouping of shapes. In order to apply those changes to all instances within your artboard, you will need to manually drag and drop from DSM into each one. You won’t be able to update them all using the down arrow button. However, if you convert that element into a symbol, then you’ll be able to achieve the desired effect you're looking for.

That being said, we definitely understand how this may not have been clear from the start and have let our documentation team know about these points in hopes of making things a bit more clear.

We’re currently tracking interest for this. If you’d like to add your vote for this feature, please contact Support here and voice your opinion!

As far as I can tell, updating works for Text Styles and Layer Styles, but not Colours, Icons or Components

Hey Carol,

I'm sorry for the trouble! I'm not sure if this issue is related to the version of Craft you're running, or if it's related to an ongoing issue. I'm going to open a ticket with our Support team for you so that we can get to the bottom of this ASAP. Keep your eyes peeled for an email.

Have a great weekend!

Beth

For anyone interested, all I needed to do was make the elements symbols for updating to work!

Hi Paulo,

Can you please clarify whether you are trying to update a color tile, or the color of an object?

Thanks,

Shaina

Hi Paulo,

Thanks for the clarification. To update a color tile, you would need to delete the tile, and add a new one. However, if you are wanting to update a color so that it updates all of its instances within the document, then they would need to save the color as a layer style, not color swatch.

In order to delete a tile from DSM, go to your DSM plugin modal, right click the item, then click Delete.

You can learn more about Creating and Using Your DSM Library here.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks,

Shaina

I'm having trouble updating and deleting elements. I updated the weight and color of one of my text styles in my Sketch file.

When I try to add it to my DSM, I receive the error message "Adding Text Style Failed". I receive the same message when I renamed the text style locally in the Sketch file.

If I try to delete the outdated text from my DSM, I receive the error message "Error Deleting Text Style".

Please advise! Thanks,

Chloe

Hi Chloe,

I'm so sorry to hear that you are running into these issues. In order to get a better idea of why you might be running into these issues, can you please answer the following?:

     1. Can you please provide the process you moved through step-by-step, or a screencast, before you received the "Adding Text Style Failed" error message?
     2. Can you please provide the process you moved through step-by-step, or a screencast, before you received the "Error Deleted Text Style" error message?
     3. What version of Sketch are you using?
     4. Have you reviewed our detailed documentation on Text Styles here in the DSM Getting Started Guide?

Look forward to hearing from you, and assisting you further.

Thanks,

Shaina
