Article Summary

Instructions:

You'll find the workbook to help you complete this activity in the sidebar under "Resources."

You've designed your components, you've built your system - now it's time to release your first version and let this system into the wild!

Don't stress, this can be as large or small of an initial release as you want. It doesn't mean you have to be prepared to share across the whole organization yet. This is version 1, it's your first draft, your first go as a team. The key to this release is to figure out what works, what doesn't, and what our next steps should be.

Stakeholders:

  • Designer
  • Developer

Keep in mind

  • Perfection is the enemy: Often teams want to wait until their system is "final" before they release the first version. The reality is, there is no final - the sooner you release, begin collecting feedback, and iterate, the better positioned you will be to succeed.
  • Use the draft responsibly: The draft in DSM is the in-progress version of the system for makers. Design system users should only be consuming released versions.
  • Showcase your first version: Hold an event, demo the system and show teams how the system will save them time and allow them to focus on their more pressing user experience needs.
