Sketch Best Practices: Colors

Article Summary

Definition | “Colors” in this case, mean any layer styles that solely contain a fill attribute (we do not recommend the pre-styles era method of using symbol masks for color fills)

Naming | align on a naming convention for color fill layer styles, that are easily translatable to how your developers will name the corresponding design tokens

Organization | create a dedicated artboard for your base colors in the Styles/Foundations (or similar) Library within your Design System

Application | use these generic color fill layer styles to style any layers or symbols that will always be tied to the base color palette

There are certain use cases where unique color layer styles may be needed for groups of components (i.e. buttons that have multiple variations), but we recommend using your base color layer styles as often as possible.
