Article Summary

If you experience any issues whilst completing the migration, review the below list of common blockers.

I can't see the option to upload a sketch file

Possible solutions:

  1. Make sure that you are in new DSM. In Sketch, go to; Plugins > New Design System Manager and make sure Show Sidebar Panel is checked. Then open the DSM sketch plugin by clicking on the DSM panel on the left hand side.
  2. If you can't see the upload button at all, you may be have the wrong permissions. You need to be either an admin or editor to be able to upload a sketch file. For DSM libraries created by admins, you'll need to be added to that library in order to edit it.

I can't import my sketch file

Possible solutions:

  1. Your sketch file has too many symbols. Often, if you have 100's of symbols in your sketch file, you could find that your sketch file upload times out. The best step is to split your file into small sketch libraries i.e Foundations (color variables, layer-styles, text-styles and icons), Components and Pages/Templates. More information on splitting your sketch file can be found here
  2. You may be using an older version of sketch. Make sure that sketch and craft are on the latest version
  3. There is a 500MB file size limit.
  4. It's also worth noting that, depending on the speed of your connection and wireless configuration, you may still experience slower upload times for files that are bigger than 100MB.

I can't find see my icons to document them in DSM

Possible solutions:

  1. Icons in your sketch file need to be marked as an exportable SVG in sketch for them to show up in DSM. Once they have been, re-upload your sketch file and then navigate to the 'icons' documentation type to document them.

Why Aren’t Certain Items Imported from Legacy DSM?

Possible solutions:

1. Non-symbol layer groups

The new DSM integrates with Sketch via Sketch Libraries, and non-symbol layer groups can’t be referenced from a Sketch library. Therefore, these items can’t be imported.

To resolve this issue:

  1. In the Sketch file associated with your legacy design system, convert the layer groups to symbols.
  2. Place the symbols in component containers.
  3. Re-upload the Sketch file to the new DSM.
  4. From the DSM website, run the import process again.

If you have several non-symbol layer groups, consider using the file export feature in legacy DSM.

2. Non-symbol icon layer groups

The new DSM integrates with Sketch via Sketch Libraries, and non-symbol icon layer groups can’t be referenced from a Sketch library. Therefore, these items can’t be imported.

To resolve this issue:

  1. In the Sketch files associated with your legacy design system, convert the icon layer groups to symbols.
  2. In the same Sketch files, mark the symbols for SVG export.
  3. Re-upload the Sketch files to the new DSM.
  4. From the DSM website, run the import process again.

If you have several non-symbol icon layer groups, consider using the file export feature in legacy DSM.

3. Symbols outside components

The new DSM exclusively uses component containers to document components; therefore, all symbols should be saved inside component containers.

To resolve this issue:

  1. In your legacy system, place the symbols in component containers.
  2. Add the symbols to the Sketch files used by the new DSM, and then re-upload those Sketch files to the new DSM.
  3. Try importing to the new DSM again.
