Commenting on documents in InVision V7

This article provides answers for InVision V7. If you’re on V6 of InVision, read this article instead. Not sure which version you're using? Find out now.

With Comment mode, you can collaborate by having asynchronous conversations on a prototype. You can start new annotated comment threads, reply to existing comments, mention important people, and even add emoji. If you want to keep conversations private to just your team, you can start private threads.

Adding Comments

To add a comment to a document screen in the InVision console:.

  1. Open your document and navigate to the desired screen.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click the comment icon (comment-mode-icon.png) or use the shortcut C.
  3. Click anywhere you want to start a new comment thread and type your comment. Or click an existing comment and type your reply.
  4. Click the drop-down and select Comment or Note.
  5. To toggle between an open or private comment, click the lock icon (open-lock-icon.png). A closed lock (invision-cloud-v7-comment-private-icon.png) indicates that the comment is private.
  6. Once finished, click Post or use the shortcut Command + Enter.

To leave a comment (or access a document) in InVision V7, you must be signed in to InVision. Also, it’s not currently possible to add a general comment to the prototype; you’ll need to add comments to specific screens instead.

Using private comments or notes

There are two types of comments for InVision V7:

  • Comment: By default, anyone who can access the document—either as an editor or as a viewer with a public document link—can see or leave regular comments.
  • Note: By default, notes are set to private, so only people with document editing access can see this type of comment; however, viewers with a public document link cannot leave notes.

To override the default settings for either regular comments or notes, toggle the lock icon accordingly: If the lock is closed (invision-cloud-v7-comment-private-icon.png), the message is private. If it's unlocked (invision-cloud-v7-comment-private-lock-icon.png), anyone who can access the document—including via private document link—can see the message.

If you don't have editing permissions for the document, you will not have access to click (or see) the lock icon for private comments.

Notifying people about comments

To notify a specific person about your comment, @ mention the person by name or email address.

Using emoji in comments

To add emoji to your comments, click the emoji icon (invision-comments-emoji-icon.png) within the comment modal. Use the Arrow keys to navigate, and then click the emoji you want to use.

To open the emoji autocomplete menu, press the : (colon) key. Then, type the name of the emoji you want to use and click the result or—once the emoji is selected—simply press Enter.
